more about “I’ll Leave the Light On”
Two memories stand as pillars of nostalgia for my childhood - the first being nearly every Sunday was spent at my grandparents, spending time with cousins building forts, climbing trees, and sneaking into the barn, followed by a takeout pizza from the local diner with all my aunts & uncles. The second, every Sunday evening, when the sun just started considering resting for the day, my grandmother turned the light on for the lamp that proudly stood in her front garden bed. She always wanted to make sure no one stumbled or couldn’t see, and all were welcome back to her home. I never recognized the significance of a simple flick of a light switch, but how symbolic that was of her, of my grandfather, of their love, their legacy.
This song started in our apartment in January of 2020, just two weeks after my grandfather passed. CJ was plucking around on the guitar while I was putting away dishes. He started with the simple phrase, “I’ll leave the light on”, and I instantly paused, plate in hand, tear ducts swelling, and I knew this was to tell the story of my grandparents.
This song has been a laborious passion project for the last three years, every detail and production element carefully selected and refined while we produced it in our home studio. We’re honored to have had the chance to work incredibly talented folks. Special thanks to Tucker Ellis, who played bass on the track, CJ Williams, who played drums, our mixing engineer, Eliott Glinn, our mastering engineer, Jonathan Grant Berline, and a huge shout out to Joni Fuller for the beautiful live string arrangement!
